Microsoft Surface Pro 2

Microsoft has long been the boon of the industry, as having really great ideas, but insanely bad products. In the past three years, they have produced Windows 7, 8, and the Surface Tablets. Of the three, they kind of hit a wall with the Surface. In line with their corporate strategy, they have introduced an upgrade to their device, sticking a “2” at the end. Let’s see if it warrants the title.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is an update to their last device, which innovated the tablet industry by supporting the full functionality of a desktop in the size of a tablet (albeit a very fat tablet). Microsoft has managed to invent a new category in the tablet game, by not really making a tablet, but more of a laphlet (a cross between a laptop and a tablet). It features the touchscreen and portability benefits of having a tablet, but the full functionality of having a laptop.

The updated device now features a “faster, longer battery life version of the original mode, upgraded with a current generation Haswell processor. The keyboard cover is also improved with backlit keys, and is among the best tablet accessories ever devised.” But, aside from these key features, it has also remained like the previous generation, a “stubbornly thick and heavy [tablet] compared with some of the sleeker competitors. The base 64GB version may leave you starved for storage, and the keyboard cover, practically required, shold be included instead of sold separately.”

The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 comes with the Windows 8.1 operating system update, the full fledged operating system crammed into a tablet, with no compromises. Coupled with the new Haswel Processors from Intel, this is a beast of a tablet. If you want to run Grand Theft Auto IV on this machine, you theoretically could. Here are the upgrades over the original model:

·         New Intel fourth generation Core i5 Processor

·         Improved battery life (lasts nearly 7 hours longer in battery tests conducted by CNET)

·         Backlit detachable keyboard cover

I know, these may not be attention grabbing updates, like maybe making the device thinner or sleeker, or maybe redesigning it to reflect the more hipster style makeovers devices have been updated to lately. But at least its an improvement over the original, without any sacrifices.

But on the other hand, if you were to compare this device to other offerings by different companies, your wallet may start to second guess you. Lets compare the Surface Pro 2 to the Macbook Air, as an example.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Specs:

·         Price: Starts at $899

·         Display / Resolution: 10.6 inch, 1920x1080 touch screen

·         PC CPU: 1.6ghz Intel Core i5 4200U

·         PC Memory: 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1.6mhz

·         Graphics: 1,792MB Intel HD 4400

·         Storage: 64GB SSD

·         Optical Drive: None

·         Networking: 802.11 b/g/n wireless, Bluetooth 4.0

·         Operating System: Windows 8.1 (64 bit)

Macbook Air 11 inch (June 2013)

·         Price: $999

·         Display / Resolution: 11.6 inch, 1766x768 screen

·         PC CPU: 1.3ghz Intel Core i5 4250U

·         PC Memory: 4gb DDR3 SDRAM 1.6mhz

·         Graphics: 1,024MB Intel HD Graphics 5000

·         Storage: 128gb SSD

·         Optical Drive: None

·         Networking: 802.11 a/c wireless, Bluetooth 4.0

·         Operating System: OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.4

As you can see from the specifications listed above, if you really want the portability of a tablet (a fat tablet) over that of the thinnest laptop ever produced, then get the Microsoft Surface Pro 2. But if you don’t have enough cash to shell out for a laphlet, stick to the more conventional designs of a thinner laptop or another category competitor.
